Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch

Although few people recognise the name, this is the man who put the M in BDSM. Born in in the late 1800s in the Ukraine, he penned a number of titles that were concerned with female domination of the male character in the book. Later in his life he and his then wife signed an agreement with an unknown women to become her slave for a period of six months. He had it written into the agreement between them that when the Mistress was in a particularly foul mood she should wear expensive furs and not spare them the whip. This is where “Venus in Furs” comes from. This book is said to mirror his life as fetishist and keen interests in sexual deviance.
